One of the casino proposals competing with Tioga Downs and Traditions Casino saw its resolution for support fail after it was pulled from a nearby county’s legislative agenda. Wilmorite, the Rochester-based real estate development company, is looking to build a $350 million casino facility in the small Seneca County town of Tyre, about 90 miles northwest of Binghamton. The company looked to receive the support of the Onondaga County Legislature, but the legislature pulled the resolution from their agenda on Tuesday. The casino proposal has been met with some strong opposition at the local level as well, with a group of Tyre residents creating a coalition named Casino Free Tyre, and members of the group spoke during the public comment period of Tuesday’s Onondaga County meeting despite the resolution being pulled from the agenda. Community support is one of the criteria when the state decides which group to award with a casino license. The Wilmorite group, Tioga Downs, and Traditions at the Glen are the three groups competing for the Eastern Southern Tier license.
