After the federal government denied funding to assist upstate New York with recent flooding, the state will now provide $16 million to homeowners, business operators, and farmers in five of the 12 upstate counties that were declared disaster areas.
None of the counties in the Southern Tier will receive any of the funding. While U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer said he continues to push Albany to appeal the federal decision, Governor Cuomo has announced that the state will give money to Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Niagara, and Montgomery Counties.
Seven counties that were declared disaster areas weren’t included in the state’s announcement, including Chenango, Cortland, and Delaware counties. The funding comes after a report from the state Comptroller’s office that state revenues were $321 million over projections as of the end of last month. The state budget totals more than $135 billion.
