A Waste Management garbage truck struck a railroad bridge Tuesday afternoon, causing extensive damage to the bridge. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on Patch Road in the Town of Chenango. The driver of the garbage truck failed to adhere to the height restriction sign and attempted to drive under the bridge, striking it with his vehicle. The accident caused damage to the bridge structure which has resulted in a temporary road closure of Patch Road between Jason Drive and Asbury Street. The railroad company will reportedly begin repair work as soon as possible. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes of travel when in the area. The truck driver, 32-year-old Frank Contino was issued a traffic citation for failure to obey a traffic control device.
