A former UHS employee is being honored for the actions he took to help subdue the man who shot Johnson City Patrolman David W. Smith in March of 2014. 60-year-old Neil Jones has been awarded the Carnegie Medal of Heroism, which is given to civilians who greatly risk their lives in an attempt to save the lives of others. Jones was working as a valet supervisor at the time the incident took place. When he saw Police Officer Lou Cioci struggle to restrain the gunman who had just shot Patrolman Smith, he jumped in to help. Jones is said to have suffered a heart attack shortly after aiding Officer Cioci. The Carnegie Medal of Heroism has a review committee that searches for and reviews acts of heroism across the country before handing out the award.
