A Binghamton University professor has been awarded a grant worth several hundred thousand dollars for work to improve computer chips. Timothy Miller is an assistant professor of computer science, and was given a grant worth $450,000 from the National Science Foundation to conduct research over the course of the next five years. Miller’s work will look to reduce the amount of energy used by chips in devices including smartphones. The research will look to save battery life, which will reduce the carbon footprints of phones, as they will require less charging. Miller says that on larger scale computing systems that reduction in the carbon footprint will be even more evident. Miller has been a member of the BU staff since 2012 after receiving his doctorate at Ohio State University. He is also currently developing a short course for high school students on computing.
