Once again there will be no Crappie Derby in Whitney Point this year. The Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Association on Monday cancelled this years’ event, which had been scheduled for Saturday, February 9th. This year marked the 40th annual attempt to stage what’s now called the Almost Annual Crappie Derby. The Parks Department said a check of the ice layer on Whitney Point Lake on Monday morning measured only eight inches of ice, which is not considered safe for the large number of participants expected. In the 40 year history of the event, there have been 10 cancellations, five of them in the past decade alone.
