The Nichols Town Board said it has no current role to play in a possible sale of a former church.

According to the Morning Times, members of the community have called on the Town Board to hold a public hearing on the possible sale of the former Lounsberry United Methodist Church on East River Road.

The building is rumored to be changed from a Christian church to a mosque.

Board members have said there is not mechanism that would allow the town to hold a public hearing on the topic.

The church is zoned as a church, so a mosque wouldn’t change the allowable use if one is proposed for the site.
