Firefighters also battled a fire along Route 79 Wednesday in Richford. The call went out around 1:15 p.m. at 997 Route 79, near the intersection of Route 38. Firefighters say a chimney fire is to blame for the structure fire, which was a total loss. A family of four was said to live there but no one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. The structure fire was difficult to extinguish, according to fire officials. Traffic was rerouted for several hours Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of State Routes 79 and 38. Fire departments from Newark Valley and Berkshire assisted Richford Fire at the scene, along with crews from NYSEG.
