Asteelflash has announced that it will be laying off 34 employees at its plant off Route 38 in Owego. The international electronic manufacturing services company recently filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the New York State Department of Labor. State law requires businesses to give early warning of closings and layoffs if the business employs 50 or more full-time workers. The company says the reason for the layoffs is economic, and the 34 cuts are scheduled to take place on January 17th of next year. The Owego plant is home to 175 employees, and Asteelflash employs 5,700 workers worldwide. The company acquired Catalyst Manufacturing Services in Owego in January of 2012, almost exactly two years before the layoffs are scheduled to occur. Asteelflash has released no word on the cuts outside of the official paperwork filed with the state.
