A pattern of large truck accidents in the village of Owego has the New York State Department of Transportation making changes to pavement markings. Last night, a
public meeting was held to discuss the change in pavement markings on State Route 96 at the intersection of Main St. and North Ave. The changes will improve the alignment of the traffic lanes to reduce the number of accidents. The new pavement markings would combine the two existing lanes on Main St. approaching North Ave. from the west into a single left-turn/through lane in what is now the through lane. The existing left-turn lane would become a painted gore area with stripes, that indicate traffic should not drive on the area. The DOT plans on beginning the project as soon as possible and hopes to complete it before the snow falls.
