The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council held its meeting yesterday in Tioga County for the first time ever, with a meeting at the Owego Treadway Inn. At Thursday’s meeting, the council discussed their task of ranking 179 project proposals in the region that are looking to get a share of $750 million in state funding. Last year, the Southern Tier region was awarded just under $82 million from the state for 87 projects, and they were later deemed one of the “top performers” in the state. Any projects hoping to receive a chunk of that state funding had to submit an application to the council by June 16th. Among the projects are plans for a Collier Street Commons, a mixed-use building on Court Street, and redevelopment of buildings across the region. The purpose of the council is to find and carry out ideas which will boost the regional economy.
