Lockheed Martin served layoff notices to 587 employees across the country on Wednesday, including 65 in Owego. Most of the laid off workers will work their last shift on November 20th. All of the workers company-wide that were laid off were part of Lockheed’s Mission Systems and Training business. While company officials declined to say which plant had the most layoffs, Lockheed’s plant in Salina, near Syracuse, notified 80 employees of layoffs on Wednesday. Last week, it was reported that the company had abandoned its plan to close the Salina plant and transfer the employees elsewhere, which would have included 280 being moved to Owego. The original estimation announced in October stated that Lockheed would be cutting about 600 U.S. positions, and they actually cut 13 less positions than estimated. In August, Lockheed had to cut 67 positions more than estimated during a round of layoffs. Following the 65 cuts in Owego announced on Wednesday, the plant now employs 2,600 workers.
