Tioga County Fire Investigators are now confirming that one person died in an early morning house fire, in Candor. The Candor Fire Department was called to 119 Spencer Road at about 2:30 this morning. It took about 75 firefighters about 3 hours to extinguish the fire. Departments from Spencer, Weltonville and Owego assisted, along with Candor EMS, the Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s office, and the New York State DOT. A portion of Route 96 in front of the home had to be closed for about 4 hours. It reopened around 9 o’clock this morning. The structure was completely destroyed. The fireplace was determined to be the cause of the fire, and the name of the victim has not yet been released. Fire investigators say there was no one else in the home at the time of the fire. The remainder of the investigation has been turned over to the Coroner’s office, and the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division.
