The Village of Owego has announced the details for the Aug. 1 referendum vote to let residents decide on whether or not to abolish the Village Court and change the Clerk/Treasurer position to appointed. The vote will be held from noon to 9pm at the Central Fire Station on North Avenue in Owego. It is separated into two propositions. The first will ask village voters if they would like to abolish the Village Court and transfer all operations to the Town of Owego. The second proposition will ask voters if the currently-elected Clerk/Treasurer position should be changed to appointed, meaning that the office would be filled by an appointment of the Mayor and Village Board instead of by the public. All village residents who are registered to vote are invited to cast a ballot in the special election.
