This past weekend, as America celebrated 239 years of independence, Tioga County celebrated a piece of its history as well. Saturday was the 124th anniversary of the dedication of the Tioga County Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The memorial is at Court House Square in Owego. It was unveiled and dedicated on July 4th, 1891. The monument stands 50 feet high and is made from 100 tons of granite. It’s fitted with cast iron cannons, which were mounted upside down.
