The Athens School Board approved the school district’s final budget with a 5.1 percent tax increase at their meeting on Monday night.

The board unanimously approved the $47 million spending plan.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Craig Stage discussed the future of the school district, including a possibility of closing SRU Elementary School in the near future.

The district would consolidate to one campus in Athens with Lynch-Bustin Elementary School, Harlan Rowe Middle School and Athens Area High School.

If this proposal is approved it would not take place until the 2027-28 school year.

Stage said that this move would help the school district maintain opportunities for students in the future.

The school board did not take any actions on the proposal on Monday night. If they decide to move forward, there will be a public forum and public vote.
