A search for a missing prostitute, who disappeared on Long Island last May, has now resulted in the discovery of an eighth murder victim.
The initial search for Shannan Gilbert led to the discovery of four bodies last December near Ocean Parkway and Gilgo Beach on Long Island.
Gilbert was not among the first four victims.
Last Tuesday, a fifth body was discovered, followed Monday by the discovery of three more bodies.
The common denominator in the first four victims is that they were all advertising sexual services on the website Craigslist.
The four victims found in the last week have not yet been identified.
Police said it was too early to assume that the eight victims are connected to the same serial killer, but a spokesperson added that the four latest victims were left on the beach about as long as the earlier victims.
The earlier victims were reported missing between July 2007 and September 2010.
