Authorities remained focused on the town of Cadyville this morning searching wooded areas for escaped prisoners, David Sweat and Richard Matt. The two convicted killers escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora early on June 6 and have not been seen since. Cadyville is about eight miles from the maximum security prison. On Wednesday dogs picked up the fugitive’s scent in the area. In the woods, police discovered food wrappers, bedding and a footprint.

Investigators say they’re questioning several people including employees at the prison. No one has been charged. This morning, hundreds of law enforcement authorities boarded buses outside the Clinton Correctional Facility to assist in the search. Sweat was serving a sentence of life in prison without parole for the murder of Broome County Sheriff’s deputy Kevin Tarsia. Matt was convicted of killing his former boss in 1997 in Niagara County.

Dogs have picked up the scent of David Sweat and Richard Matt on the sixth day of searching. Dogs picked up the scent of the two escaped inmates in Cadyville about three miles east of the Clinton Correctional Facility, but it’s unclear when the convicts were last there. Yesterday’s search involved more than 500 law enforcement personnel, along with K9 and aviation units. Police blocked off a main road outside of Cadyville and Dannemora to focus the search in a wooded area. Meanwhile, a Philadelphia cab driver reported picking up two men who matched the descriptions of the convicts and dropping them off at the city’s Amtrak station yesterday morning. The Philadelphia Police Commissioner said other sightings have been reported in several cities and he had no reason to think the inmates were in Philadelphia. The search was expanded this week after investigators learned that the inmates had talked before their breakout about going to Vermont.
