Binghamton mayor Rich David has announced a new wave of properties being targeted by the city’s lockdown law for repeated criminal activity. Last month, the city used its lockdown law to close the nightclub 17 East, which was the location where a drug bust took place back in March. Now, five new properties have been sent warning letters after they have experienced multiple crimes at the locations. The five properties being warned are on Crandall, Edwards, Park, and Vine Streets, along with Pennsylvania Avenue. The lockdown law, or the Property and Building Nuisance Reform Law, assigns point values for different crimes, and if a property receives over 12 points in six months, or 18 points in a single year, it is given a warning. Over the past year, the property at 33 Edwards Street in Binghamton has accumulated the most points, 42, for drug activity and 20 police calls. After warning letters are sent out the properties have an opportunity to submit a corrective action plan, and if any criminal activity continues, the city has the ability to temporarily close the building. Thirteen properties were sent warnings of lockdown back in February, and all but one submitted a corrective action plan at that time.
