In Towanda, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission say that it is safe to both boat and fish in the Susquehanna River following last week’s chemical spill. Drinking water is also safe since the nearest public water supply is over 20 miles away, which has allowed the chemical to sufficiently dilute to the point that officials are not worried. The spill occurred last week when there was a power outage at Global Tungsten and Powders Corporation plant in Towanda, which caused a tank containing solvent to overflow. It is estimated that 100 gallons of the solvent was released.
