Maine-Endwell School District has been struggling to make ends meet in their almost $4 million budget gap. Now, just weeks before the budget deadline, they are seeing some relief thanks to state aid. According to Superintendent Jason VanFossen, more than $450,000 coming from state aid will fill the rest of their 2013-14 budget gap, even leaving them with some surplus.
At the budget meeting Thursday night, VanFossen said approximately 40 positions will be terminated, music and athletics will be cut back severely and a tax levy holding steady at almost 6-percent. The school board wants to know what the community thinks about the budget, and whether the surplus should be used to bring back some positions or programs. Surveys are available online and the community has until April 14 to fill them out. The board will vote on the budget on April 22.
