After months of hard work and planning, the parents, students, and community in Owego were able to get a glance at the design plans for the new Owego Elementary School. The new school will be built in the same place as the old elementary school, which was destroyed in the flood of September 2011. However, the new building will be raised above the 500-year flood plain in an effort to prevent similar problems in the future. The new elementary includes plans for an auditorium, as well as additional space for special education. Steps have also been taken to make the new building more energy efficient to help cut down on operating expenses for the district. Designs for the new administration office and maintenance building, which were also damaged by the flood, are currently underway as well. The district’s goal is to have students in the new elementary building by the spring of 2015.
