An Owego-Apalachin Middle School 8th grader came home with an award from the National Science Fair for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
The fair, which was held at the Rochester Institute of Technology this past weekend, awarded Decker Ayers 3rd place amongst students from all over the country, for his experiment named “Frostbitten Hearing Aids”.
Ayers experiment came about after winter campouts with his Boy Scout Troop 38 of Owego resulted in issues with moisture that gathered inside his hearing aids during the day and freezing at night, making them inoperable by the morning. Ayers experiment involved finding a container which would keep the hearing aids above the freezing point.
He was awarded the “Most Creative” student award given by the RIT science students. Decker Ayers is no newcomer to success at this Science Fair, coming in first place in 2011, and 2nd place in 2012.
