After its original budget proposal was rejected last month, the Owego-Apalachin School District board decided last night to submit a revised budget to residents for a vote.  The revised budget cuts $68,000 from the original proposal and includes a 1.5 percent increase in the property tax levy. The original proposal had a 1.9 percent increase.  The voters are asked to return to the polls from noon to 8 p.m. on June 21 at the Apalachin Elementary School and Owego-Apalachin Middle schools.  Superintendent Dr. William Russell says that the revised budget and the contingency budget they would be forced to go to if this fails are exactly the same with the only difference being under a contingency budget, they would have to start charging organizations to use their facilities and the board does not want to have to go that route.

Residents defeated the original proposal May 17 by a 30-vote margin.  Owego-Apalachin’s budget was the only one in the Eastern-Broome Tioga region to be defeated.  Dr. Russell’s entire press conference is below.
