Vestal Middle School’s Environmental Expo 2011 will take place on Wednesday, April 27th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Featuring projects by eighth-grade students on global awareness, the future of our environment and green solutions for everyday living, the Expo also includes information from local businesses and vendors.
This year we are pleased to offer an electronics waste drive.
Eco-International will be providing an opportunity to responsibly recycle your obsolete electronics such as computers and computer
equipment, laptops, TVs, printers, scanners, copiers, speakers and small appliances.
Students will display their projects on green recreation, wooden chair art, up-cycled dog beds, repurposed tiles, solar cookers, green shopping and organic gardening, just to name a few.
Joining the student projects will be demonstrations and displays from local businesses.
These include Broome Community College’s Ecology Club, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Earthsponse, Eastern Mountain Sports, Finch Hollow Nature Center, Lowe’s, Meadowlands Geothermal, NYSEG, Ravenwood Gardens, Southern Tier Green Consulting and Vestal High School’s Environmental Club, among others.
You can also see a hybrid test bus, provided by BAE Systems, and a Prius, provided by Jack Sherman Toyota.
Admission to the Expo is free and open to the public.
There will be hands-on activities for children of all ages, plus raffles and door prizes.
In addition to the electronics waste drive by eco-International, you can also bring your retired cell phones to donate to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that collects old, unwanted cell phones and sells them to a recycling company in order to fund prepaid calling cards that our troops can use to stay in touch with their families.
To date, 1.5 million minutes of calling time has been donated through Cell Phones for Soldiers.
Other items welcomed for recycling are bottles and cans, batteries and used ink cartridges.
