A bill was just passed in the New York State Assembly and Senate that could save municipalities and taxpayers in New York $100 Million dollars annually. The bill makes it easier for local municipalities to start the process of upgrading their street lamps to more energy efficient LED lighting. Currently, about 75% of the street lamps in New York are owned by utility companies. This has made it difficult for municipalities to upgrade to more financially-friendly lighting options. This bill eases the process for municipalities to purchase the street lights in their area from utility companies, and make the LED conversion on their own. The bill is now awaiting Governor Andrew Cuomo’s approval.
