A subcommittee for the New York Board of Regents made a number of changes to the state’s Common Core rollout. Changes include making this year’s third graders the first class to have to fully meet the new state standards, as opposed to this year’s 9th graders. If that change were to go through, students would not have to meet the Common Core standards in order to graduate until 2022. Until that year, students will still have to take the new tests, but will still be able to graduate even with lower grades. Changes were also made to help alleviate concerns from teachers, as the subcommittee decided to allow any teachers fired for ineffective ratings to be able to mount a defense based on being poorly prepared by their district.
