New York Congressman Richard Hanna is speaking out against new regulations enacted by an office of the Federal Department of Transportation, which regulate the hours in which truck drivers will be able to drive. Before July 1st, truckers who drove 70 hours in one week, the maximum allowed, could take a 34-hour restart, or break from driving. The new rules says that drivers can only take one restart per week, and if they do, they cannot drive from 1 AM to 5 AM for two straight days. Hanna and other opponents to the new law say that not allowing truck drivers to drive during the early morning forces them to drive during peak traffic hours, making the roads less safe for everyone. Hanna has introduced his own bill, the TRUE Safety Act, which would revert the rules to the pre-July requirements.
