Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new initiative on Sunday that would provide college classes in some of New York state’s prisons. Cuomo said that studies have shown that investing in college education for prisoners can reduce their chances of ending up back in prison, which would save taxpayer dollars in the long-run. The program would provide the classes at ten state prisons, one in each region across New York. The state will start working with educational associations to provide both professors and curriculum starting at the end of next month. Cuomo says that both associates and bachelor’s degrees will be possible for the prisoners to earn.
