Police have arrested the Chemung County town of Erin’s highway superintendent after he is accused of stealing more than $50,000 in goods and services. According to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Office, Roger Burlew submitted fake vouchers for payment. Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said Burlew looted the town garage to fix his tractor and support his mechanic business. Burlew became highway supervisor in 1998 and had allegedly submitted at least 178 fake vouchers to the town of Erin since 2007, according to Schneiderman’s office. Officials said in one case, Burlew submitted a voucher for forklift tires, but the highway department doesn’t own a forklift. Police charged Burlew with grand larceny in the second degree, a felony, and four counts of offering a false instrument for filing, also a felony. Burlew was arraigned in the Town of Erin Court and released on bail. He could face five to 15 years in prison if convicted of the highest charge.
