The investigation continues into the shooting death of Trooper Joel Davis Sunday in Jefferson County. State Police say the 36-year-old father of three was responding to a call of shots fired during a domestic dispute when he was shot once in the side, despite wearing a bulletproof vest. The alleged shooter, 32-year-old Justin Walters, surrendered to another officer. Police later found Walters’ wife, 27-year-old Nichole, dead in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. A third victim, Rebecca Finkle, was also shot in the upper torso. She is expected to survive. One of her children was found at the scene by police, along with the Walters’ child. Both were unharmed. The Army says Justin Walters is a staff sergeant in the 10th Mountain Division and has been stationed at Fort Drum for the last 10 years. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011. Davis was a four-year veteran of the state police, but previously worked for 11 years in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Gov. Cuomo has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Trooper Davis.
