Ithaca’s new police chief was sworn into office Thursday, taking on a job that he should be pretty comfortable with. John Barber has been serving as interim police chief since last fall when Ed Vallely retired. Barber has been on the force for 20 years and previously said that one of his goals in the new role is to improve internal affairs investigations and officer performance and accountability during his term.
