Tony Stewart had surgery on his right leg Monday, but team officials stated that it would not hinder his return to the car for next season.
Stewart-Haas Racing announced that Stewart had surgery Monday morning to examine and close a wound on his right shin, which stems from the broken tibia and fibula he suffered in sprint car crash Aug. 5. It’s his third surgery since the accident.
The team stated that the surgery was a “proactive measure.’’
Stewart previously had surgery on the leg, which he injured at Southern Iowa Speedway, on Aug. 6. That was a preliminary procedure to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. The second surgery took place Aug. 8 and involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia.
Teammate Danica Patrick gave an update on Stewart last weekend at Kansas Speedway, saying Stewart was “doing really good. He is very focused on recovery and doing what’s right along the way. That’s good because you know he’s got that rebellion streak in him, but he’s been very dedicated to the process. So, you’ll see him back just as good as ever.”
