Multiple fire departments responded early this morning to a house fire in Chenango County that sent two people to the hospital. The Smithville Fire Department was dispatched around 2 AM to 127 State Highway 220. A 71-year-old man and his 37-year-old grandson were living in the home and were both inside when the fire started. Fire officials say the grandson jumped out of a second story window and went to the neighbor’s home to get help getting his grandfather out of the house. Both victims were taken to Upstate Medical in Syracuse for burns, the severity of which are not known at this time. The fire took over two hours to put out, and the home is a total loss. Departments from Triangle, Greene, and Oxford responded to the scene, along with state police. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
