Endicott native Jon ‘Bones’ Jones won the UFC light heavyweight championship Saturday, defeating Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in Newark, New Jersey.
Jones was in control of the mixed martial arts contest from the beginning.
He had a substantial reach advantage over ‘Shogun’ and used his superior fitness to win the opening two rounds.
In the third, Jones knocked Rua down and finished him with a left hand to the body and a knee to the head.
The referee quickly stopped the bout as the champion collapsed to the mat.
It was officially scored a TKO victory for Jones, now at 23 the youngest champion in UFC history.
Jones has a record of 13 wins and one loss.
The loss was a controversial disqualification in a match Jon was clearly winning.
Jones made headlines a few hours before the event started.
He was meditating in a park in Paterson, New Jersey, when he heard a woman yelling that she had been robbed.
Jon ran down the thief held him in a four-figure leglock until police arrived.
