From Amy Culver:
Skyview Drags opened for business in the middle of the 2004 drag racing season. Since that day, the track has been growing and earning accolades from racers, fans and the IHRA, which sanctions the track as an 1/8-mile member. In 2007, the IHRA presented its IHRA Sportsman Track of the Year award to owner George Swansbrough and track manager Amy Culver. Skyview Drags was subsequently recognized, twice, as the IHRA ProAm Track of the Year.
“We started out with people telling me that I couldn’t build a race track on top of a mountain,” states owner George Swansbrough. A drag strip, by definition, is straight and level. “There was nothing level about the property on the ridge, so major excavation and fill were needed before the strip and pit area could be built,” said Swansbrough. Work started in 2003 and the track opened in July 2004.
Today, the facility is the pride of the owner and the racers who call Skyview home. “This is a beautiful place to race with a great 1/8-mile track and plenty of pits spaces,” says 2010 IHRA Top Dragster ProAm winner John Cooper from Binghamton, N.Y. “I’ve been racing here since the day the track opened,” adds 2010 IHRA Quick Rod ProAm winner and 2008 and 2009 Track Champion Don Kiekel from Binghamton, N.Y. “I’m proud to call this track home and to be a part of the great family of racers that are here every week.” The IHRA brought their ProAm circuit to Skyview in 2008 and it’s been an annual event ever since. “Having the ProAm here at Skyview gives the racers an amazing opportunity and the home track advantage,” said 2009 IHRA Hot Rod ProAm winner Jim Potenziano, Sr. from Johnson City, N.Y.
Next weekend, the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment ProAm will roar into town with professional and amateur racers going head to head in seven classes for two days to try and take home a coveted Ironman trophy or two. The ProAm offers racing for Top Dragster, Top Sportsmen, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Super Stock, Stock and Hot Rod classes.
