The Waverly baseball team jumped on Newark Valley with five runs in the first inning and did not look back, as the Wolverines won 15-1 yesterday. Brendyn Stillman had two triples and 3 RBI and Nate Bennett scored four runs for Waverly. Pitchers Mason Salsman and DJ Meyers combined on a three-hitter.
In other games from yesterday: Owego defeated Norwich 5-2 with Ben Schmidt earning the win and Tioga scored 15 runs in the sixth inning to beat Newfield 24-2. In softball, Tioga’s Sam Wood pitched her 10th no-hitter as the Tigers shutout Newfield, Waverly beat Newark Valley 9-1, Candor beat Odessa-Montour and Owego lost at Norwich 6-3. Bre Howe scored four goals and assisted on five others as the Owego girls lacrosse team won 13-3 over Dryden.
Tioga held a special ceremony yesterday to recognize several student-athletes continuing their athletic careers at the next level. Taylor Ayers will play field hockey at Mansfield, Adam Zwierlien will play football at Buffalo State while Jesse Manuel and Zach Hutchinson will play football at Morrisville.
