Four Tioga County squads won Section 4 Championships this weekend, including the Newark Valley football team. The Cardinals won their first-ever sectional title with a 48-12 victory over Spencer-Van Etten/Candor. Brett Stewart had a day, with 141 rushing yards, 62 passing yards, a touchdown catch, and an interception.
In volleyball, Owego (pictured), Tioga, and Candor all won Section 4 titles on Saturday. It was the sixth straight for Owego, the fourth in five years for Tioga, and the first since 2008 for Candor.
In college football, Syracuse lost their quarterback Eric Dungey to a concussion and the game 54-0 to Clemson. They will try and rebound at home this week against NC State.
In NASCAR, Carl Edwards won a rain-shortened race at Texas to advance to the Championship Four, joining Jimmie Johnson. Two more will qualify this week.
