The Tioga football team advanced to the state final four with a dominating 50-14 win over Sandy Creek on Friday night. Jesse Manuel scored five touchdowns to lead the Tigers, who will play Section 5’s Bishop Kearney on Friday at Cicero-North Syracuse. The season is over for Waverly after they fell 17-14 to Cazenovia in overtime on Saturday. The Wolverines forced the extra session with a touchdown pass from Peyton Miller to Shane Carpenter and a successful two point conversion. Caz kicked a field goal in the first possession of overtime, but Waverly’s attempt to answer was undone by an errant snap.
In volleyball, both Owego and Tioga are headed to the state semifinals after wins on Saturday. Owego dropped the first two games against Hendrick Hudson, but came roaring back to win the last three sets, including a tight two point win in the final game. Tioga and Lafayette traded sets before the Tigers prevailed 25-18 in the fifth. Both Tioga and Owego are headed to Glens Falls next weekend.
In college sports…The Syracuse men’s basketball started their season with a 57-47 win over Lehigh on Friday. They are back in action Tuesday, hosting St. Bonaventure at 7pm on WEBO. The Syracuse football team was close to an upset of the nation’s top-ranked team, before falling 37-27 to Clemson on Saturday.
In NASCAR…After a long rain delay, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won last night’s Sprint Cup race on WEBO. Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex, Jr. will compete for the championship next week.
