After they were able to get past Maine-Endwell to make it to the STAC finals, the Owego Free Academy ladies came up short when they faced Horseheads on Friday, losing 59-26. Horseheads, the 18th ranked team in the state in Class AA, forced the Lady Indians into 31 turnovers for the game, and never looked back after a strong first quarter, aided by a 13-0 run. The win marked Horseheads’ first STAC title since joining the conference in 1999. In the loss, Owego senior Rachel Merrill scored 14 of her teams’ 26 points, and also had 10 rebounds for another double-double. Emily Merrill scored 6 points. Next up for the Lady Indians will be a Wednesday matchup with Vestal in the sectional semifinals.
