Nineteen future lineworkers have graduated from a training program developed by New York State Electric and Gas with SUNY Broome Community College and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 10.

NYSEG says the 16-week internship combined classroom instruction with hands-on field experience across the utility’s New York service area. Together, the 19 students completed more than 20,000 hours of on-the-job training while learning the practical and safety skills required for electric line work.

Part of the program used NYSEG’s training facility and pole yard in Johnson City, giving participants experience in an environment designed to reflect the work they may encounter in the field. Retired NYSEG lineworkers also provided classroom instruction, connecting the students with experienced workers from the trade.

The graduates earned First Aid and CPR credentials along with training certifications for Altec equipment and Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements. NYSEG launched the program in April 2024 with SUNY Broome and IBEW Local 10 as a workforce-development partnership.

The company says the training is intended to prepare participants for lineworker careers that maintain and restore the electric system. The graduation marks completion of the current cohort’s classroom and field requirements.
