The Village of Waverly and Town of Barton are looking at the possibility of abandoning the Western portion of River Road . The discussion comes after Tioga County announced that, like Chemung County, it will no longer maintain the portion of River Road that lies within its jurisdiction. There are already signs leading into the Western portion of road that declare it “Closed” however there are no barriers preventing a vehicle or pedestrian from heading down toward that end. The Village of Waverly is currently looking at how to legally abandon a road. Waverly trustees have shown concern over potential liability law suits if anything were to happen in the mean time. Trustees say that the closure will not affect residents on the Eastern end of River Road in any way.
