The suspect in the 1964 murder of a 12-year-old girl in Elmira is deceased.
A DNA lab working with Elmira Police and the FBI has confirmed that the person who killed 12-year-old Mary Theresa Simpson is dead.
Simpson was reported missing on March 15, 1964. Her body was discovered four days later in a wooded area off of Combs Hill Road.
No arrests have ever been made in the case, which has remained unsolved for more than 60 years.
Evidence from the case was sent to a DNA lab in Texas back in 2023. Scientists were able to recover usable DNA and create a genetic profile believed to belong to the killer.
The name of the murder suspect has not been released. The Elmira Police Department will hold a press conference on the findings on Feb. 10.
