ELMIRA, N.Y. — Former Elmira Mayor and longtime city council member Jim Hare has passed away.
Hare died Monday, March 16, leaving behind a legacy of public service and community involvement in the Elmira area.
A graduate of the State University at Albany, Hare earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree in social studies. He was also a Vietnam veteran, serving from 1969 to 1971.
Hare spent part of his career as an educator, teaching American history and government in the Elmira City School District.
In addition to his work in public office, Hare was active in a number of local organizations. He founded the Friends of Woodlawn Cemetery and served as president of the Elmira Little Theatre.
He is remembered for his deep interest in history and his lasting contributions to local government and the community.
