The community is mourning he loss of former Waverly mayor and business owner Patrick Ayres.
Ayres passed away on Monday at the age of 71.
A Waverly High School graduate, Ayres worked for the Department of Social Services for both Tioga County and Chemung County before retiring in 2009.
Ayres, who owned Broad Street Records in Waverly, would serve his community for many years as a village trustee, deputy mayor and finally as mayor from 2017 to 2023.
As mayor, he was instrumental in obtaining the $4.5 million dollar grant that helped improve many parts of the village including the Waverly Glen Park.
A time of visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, April 28 at the Blauvelt Funeral Home.

Patrick G. Ayres, 71, of Waverly passed away peacefully with Adele by his side on Monday, April 20, 2026 at home.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur L. Sr. and Jean Maellaro Ayres; brothers, Arthur “Sonny” Ayres Jr and William “Jersey” Ayres.
Patrick is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Adele Stoughton Ayres of Waverly; his daughter, Rachel (Scott) King of Webster; his sons, Samuel Ayres of New York and Leo (Andrea Schneider) Ayres of Hershey, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Audrey, Marshall, Jackson, Emma and Natalie; his mother-in-law, Gladys Stoughton; his sister-in-law, Doreen Stoughton; cousins, Pat and Meryl LaBella and Pabby and Linda LaBella; five nieces and two nephews; along with many friends.
Pat was born in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School in the Class of 1972 where he was a member of the swim team. Pat went on to graduate from the University of Albany in 1976 with a Bachelors in Psychology. He began working with his father painting and hanging wallpaper, from Waverly to Elmira, from 1972 till 1979, when he began his career in social services with the Tioga County Department of Social Services, working from 1979 to 1994. Pat went on to work for Chemung County Department of Social Services working in Children Protective Services and Foster Care from 1995 till he retired in 2009. He was a record collector and turned his passion for records into owning and operating Broad Street Records in Waverly. Pat entered the local political scene in Waverly serving as a Trustee from 1988 to 1992, Deputy Mayor from 2012 to 2017 and Mayor from 2017 to 2023. During his time, he was instrumental in obtaining business grants, partnering with Tioga County to lease office space in the Village Office Building. As Mayor, he was proud to obtain a 4.5 million dollar grant for many local business and village improvements, including parking issues, the Waverly Glen, with new restrooms and a new amphitheater, which was dedicated in his honor and renamed the Ayres Amphitheater and the new River Road Park to be enjoyed by residents for generations to come.
Pat enjoyed photography, he used his 35mm black and white camera to take pictures of people, friends, objects and buildings he found interesting. He had a large collection of photographs that he took and developed in his dark room. Pat enjoyed his cars, starting with a Mercedes and MGB car collection. He was a Ham Radio Operator as a General Class with his call signs as WN2IBT in 1969 and WA2IBT in 1970. Pat was a member of the Waverly ROMEO, Retired Old Men Eating Out, group from 2010 till he passed. He was the founder and creator of the Taroa Nuggyism membership group from 1960 till present, where they would create phrases and where all the members had names. Pat had a love for his dogs over the years from Jim Jim to Huck.

A funeral service to honor Pat’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Glenwood Cemetery in Waverly, New York.
