Syracuse man facing charges for allegedly possessing drugs at Broome County Jail

A Syracuse man is facing felony charges after correction officers allegedly found fentanyl, heroin and marijuana on him at the Broome County Jail.

According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Jean Benitez-Melendez was charged with multiple counts of promoting prison contraband, tampering with physical evidence, criminal possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of governmental administration.

Benitez-Melendez had been transferred by the US Marshals to the Broome County Jail the day prior for a federal probation violation.

The suspect was processed and arraigned at the Broome County Jail.
