A candidate for Chemung County Executive is challenging incumbent candidate Chris Moss to a debate before this month’s Republican primary.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Mark Margeson challenged Moss to a debate on Thursday from 7 to 8 pm at the Ill Eagle Taphouse in Elmira.

In the post, Margeson said the voters deserve to have their questions answered in person and in public.

Moss responded in a Facebook post that he is focused on doing the work of Chemung County and not political theatrics.

Moss also stated that he won’t participate in debates organized for the purpose of boosting a challenger’s visibility.

Here is Margeson’s complete statement:

“We’ve heard all the talk around town and it is now the moment you all have been waiting for… it’s debate time! We are officially challenging Chris Moss to a debate Thursday (6/11/26) from 7-8:00pm at Ill Eagle Taphouse! You deserve to have your questions answered in person and in public. So we are inviting everyone to attend and ask those questions! We hope to see you all (and Chris Moss) there!”

Here is Moss’s complete statement:

“I’ve been clear since the start of this campaign: we’re focused on doing the work of Chemung County, not on political theatrics. My opponent is welcome to run his campaign as he chooses, but I won’t participate in debates organized for the purpose of boosting a challenger’s visibility. Our strategy has been set from day one, and we’re sticking to it. My priority remains serving the people of Chemung County and continuing the progress we’ve made together. We’re running a disciplined campaign with a clear strategy, and that doesn’t include participating in debates arranged by my opponent. I’m focused on results, not political stunts. Chemung County deserves steady leadership, and that’s what I’ll continue providing.
I always have and will remain to have an open door policy to all Chemung County residents when attempting to address their concerns.
Don’t forget early voting begins June 13th thru June 21st and election day is June 23rd. Have a great evening.”

Early voting will run from Saturday, June 13 through Sunday, June 21. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 23.
