A Binghamton man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision after he was convicted of attempted murder, among other charges, Thursday in Broome County Court. 54-year-old Ralph Townshend was sentenced as a second felony offender following his conviction of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. In addition to the attempted murder and assault charges, he was also sentenced to a concurrent term of 3.5 to 7 years on a conviction of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The charges came after an incident in August of 2012 at an apartment on Miles Street in Binghamton. Police received a call and entered an apartment to find Townshend stabbing his girlfriend, 38-year-old Eileen Montagano. She suffered four stab wounds, one of which was life threatening, and had to undergo surgery following the incident. The case was investigated by the Binghamton Police Department.
