Broome County legislators said Thursday the approval of a $10 million sewage pipeline from the county landfill near the Greater Binghamton Airport will save taxpayers money. The legislature gave unanimous support of the measure with two absences. The pipeline will carry non-toxic runoff from the landfill, to the Endicott Sewage Treatment Plant. The project is estimated to cost $10 million, $3.5 of which will be paid by a state grant secured by Senator Libous. The rest will be bonded and paid back through the fees taken from residents dropping waste at the landfill. According to the county’s deputy commissioner of solid waste management, when finished, it will save the department $100,000 each year. The pipeline will also connect to the Greater Binghamton Airport and the area surrounding it. Legislature Chairman Jerry Marinich said the sewage access could spur more industrial development near the airport.
