Firefighters were able to save a family’s holiday gifts after a fire started at the family’s house late Tuesday morning. Firefighters from Chenango, Chenango Bridge, and Choconut Center responded to 515 Castle Creek Road around 11:30 on Tuesday. Crews had to use a saw to open a hole into the lower portion of the house in order to get access to the fire. They used a second-floor window at the home to vent the smoke. When firefighters entered the home to check for damage, they were also able to save armfuls of Christmas gifts from the home. No one was home at the time of the fire and none of the responders suffered any injuries. At this time, fire investigators are looking into what caused the fire, which they believe started in the basement of the home. The flames took about a half-hour to get under control, and while there was heavy smoke, there were no heavy flames.
